Key Events in the History of Nova Scotia: 1770.
§A new authority was trenching upon the old. It went hand and hand with the growth of literacy and the ease by which political writers could get their pamphlets abroad. Though the old political guard were slow to recognize it: public opinion, right or wrong, was what was to rule: the plutocratic could rule but only through the shaping of public opinion. As Pitt observed, "Five hundred gentlemen, my Lords, are not ten millions; and if we must have a contention, let us take care to have the English nation on our side."
§In England, the members of the "Long Parliament" take their seats, it sat for 15 years, until 1785.
§Lord North becomes prime minister.
§Burke's speech, "On the Causes of the Present Discontents," re: the Wilkes controversy.
§Smuggling is "rampant."
§March 5th: Boston "Massacre": Some garrison troops in self-defence shot down a few of the Boston crowd who had attacked.
§29 Jul, Sun: "Mr. DesBarres, employed by the King, to survey the coasts of this Province, and has been here the whole of last week, removes to Port Mutton. ... Today H.M.S. Senegal comes into the harbor. His Excellency, the Governor, Lord William Campbell on board. The governor [in the company with others] ... landed at the building point, where John Doggett, Esq., and I met them. Went up the river as far as Salmon Island, and on returning, took a glass of wine at Snow's. Doggett and I went on board the Senegal to supper." (Perkins Diary.)
§12 Aug, Sun: "The officers of the Canso call to see me, with Capt. Holland and DesBarres, and took a glass of wine." (Perkins Diary.)
§December 7, 1770: Samuel Hearne (1745-92) commenced his travels in the north west and traveling with his Indian friends over a 32 month period he was to become the first white man to see the Coppermine River and Great Slave Lake.
