Key Events in the History of Nova Scotia: 1775.


§On March 22nd, Burke delivers a speech to the English Parliament sympathetic towards American colonies, "On Conciliation with the American Colonies."
§March 23rd: Patrick Henry delivers his speech, "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death."
§April 19: Fighting erupts at Lexington and Concord; it was followed by the capture of Fort Ticonderoga from the British, the battle of Bunker Hill (June), and the unsuccessful colonial assault on Quebec.
§June 27th, Tue: "Capt. White, Plymouth, arrives from Boston with an officer and sergeant on board. He brings news of an engagement between the King's troops and the provincialists at Bunker Hill .. Charlestown is burt to ashes." (Perkins Diary.)
§Burgoyne was to report: "After a fatal procrastination, not only of vigorous measures but of preparations for such, we took a step as decisive as the passage of the Rubicon, and now find ourselves plunged at once in a most serious war without a single requisition, gunpowder excepted, for carrying it on."
§"The Binney Affair."
§During the years 1772 through to 1775, it is estimated, that about 2,000 settlers came into Nova Scotia. The population for all of Nova Scotia in 1775 was around 18,000. Ten thousand English people were added since 1763, mostly, it is supposed, because of immigration. Halifax's population was about 1,800.
§July 30th, Sun: "The Governor's proclamation [dated July 5th], forbidding all intercourse with New England rebels, was read." (Perkins Diary.)
§August: Americans under Stephen Smith attacked Fort Frederick at the mouth of the St. John River and burned it to the ground. It was no great feat, as, apparently there were but four defenders.
§November 1st: Captain Marriot Arbuthnot arrives at Halifax to take over as the Commissioner of the Navy Yard.
§November 30th: Governor Legge proclaims Martial law in Nova Scotia.
